Chhath Puja: Divine Sun Worship on Riverbanks and Seashores

Chhath Puja

The Festival category is thrilled to present this intimate visual journey into Chhath Puja, one of India’s most profound and visually striking festivals. This unique four-day observance is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and his wife, Chhathi Maiya, representing a powerful practice of penance, purification, and deep gratitude. It is primarily observed in Bihar, Jharkhand, and across the eastern region of India.

As a street and travel photographer, I’m drawn to festivals that reveal the core spiritual commitment of a community. Chhath Puja photography offers an unparalleled glimpse into absolute devotion, whether performed along the vibrant Ganga riverbanks in Kolkata or against the dramatic backdrop of the seashores in Mumbai. The ritual stands apart, requiring devotees (vratins) to stand for hours in the water—often up to their necks—to offer prayers and Arghya (offerings) to both the setting and the rising sun.

This gallery of 20 captivating photos documents the entire cycle: from the preparation of the sacred prasad and the silent procession to the water’s edge, to the final, transcendent moment of the Usha Arghya at dawn. This collection captures the raw faith, the beautiful folk art, and the collective fervor of the devotees, solidifying its place as a key pillar in the Indian festival photography tradition alongside Durga Puja and Eid. Explore the light, shadow, and deep devotion that define this essential cultural moment.
