Kolkata: An Unframed Life
A city. A thousand stories. A life beyond the frame.
Kolkata is a city of contrasts and continuities—where history meets modernity, where fading memories coexist with enduring dreams, and where ordinary streets often reveal extraordinary stories.
In Kolkata: An Unframed Life, photographer Somnouli Sarkar offers a deeply personal interpretation of the city through his documentary and street photography. His camera moves beyond Kolkata’s iconic landmarks to discover its quieter moments—the people, streets, architecture, celebrations, everyday encounters and fleeting expressions that together create the city’s distinctive character.
Sarkar’s approach is rooted in observation. His photographs seek to capture not merely what Kolkata looks like, but how the city feels and moves.
The book is divided into four thematic sections:
Echoes of Eternity
A visual exploration of Kolkata’s heritage, memories and enduring architectural character.
When the City Celebrates
The colour, energy and collective spirit of festivals and celebrations that transform the city’s streets.
Rhythms in Motion
The ceaseless movement of Kolkata—its people, transport, streets and everyday urban choreography.
Life Goes On
The quieter, more intimate moments that reveal the resilience and humanity of the city.
Together, these four sections form a continuous visual narrative—a portrait of Kolkata as a city that is constantly changing while retaining an unmistakable sense of identity.
The book’s Foreword by Ranjan Bandyopadhyay reflects on Sarkar’s distinctive photographic vision and his ability to approach the city almost like a painter, allowing photography and visual expression to become intertwined.
Published by H2O (Hold To Own), Kolkata: An Unframed Life is intended not merely as a photographic record, but as a lasting visual document of a city whose stories continue to unfold.
